Murph! A Memorial Day Tradition
Every Memorial Day, my world tends to move towards testing our gym membership progress. How well will you do at Murph this year? The CrossFit workout named for the honor of Michael Murphy… one of the victims portrayed in the movie Lone Survivor.
Annually, I am guessing the number is now reaching 400,000+ people who perform this workout in honor of those who gave their life protecting others, for a cause that is a global cause. And we are grateful for their sacrifice.
So Murph, is a workout of endurance, and hopefully some intensity.
1 mile run
100 Pull-ups 200 Push-ups 300 Squats
(partition as you like, meaning you could do 20 rounds of 5 pulls, 10 push-ups, and 15 squats)
1 mile run
*wear a weight vest if you have one, FOR TIME
The final statement, “for time”, means push yourself through this as fast as you can, because you are timed.
I have done this workout about 12-14 times in the past. I did not do it this year, but I still encouraged hundreds of people to do it (I am nursing some issues that I need to respect).
One of the coolest things about this workout, is that it creates mental anguish in just about everybody… and under the watchful eye of a caring coach, you are encouraged to push through, because “murph” would have. You are encouraged that the pain we feel from day to day isn’t enough to stop you… it is just pain. And as we feel this pain in the workout… remember those who fought through pain.
I love the encouragement, and I love the fact that this mimics our life. Push through Murph, and I promise you that you will push through more difficulty in all areas of your life.
