Pastor Andy Stanley has been doing a series on the “N Commandments” which are commands Jesus gave us as things NOT to do. This weeks message was about worrying, and NOT to do it.
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]? Matthew 6:25-27.
This seems like an impossible task to not worry, but verse 27 in bold above gives good reason to try. There is nothing to gain from worrying. Pastor Andy equated worrying to pulling future concerns, even those we have no control over, to the present day. The reason to avoid this is because it leads to stress. Stress that is not productive. Remember stress is one of the 3 contributors to heart disease, the number 1 disease killer in our country. How much of our stress is unnecessary?
I understand this is no easy task. I struggle with it on a regular basis. I’ll often worry about my children and their future, and if I’m doing what I need to prepare them. But I need to pull back and realize that worry has no benefit. However, as mentioned in the verses above, we do have the opportunity to reap what we sow. So instead of worrying about my children’s future, I invest in them when I can by loving on them, teaching them, and disciplining them and i need to rely on God for the rest.
Its important to get that point. When He says don’t worry, I can’t take that as don’t bother putting time into your kids because they’ll be fine anyway, it’s don’t worry about tomorrow when you have today to deal with, and today I need to be a loving father. The same holds true with your health. Don’t worry about what could happen tomorrow, deal with today first. By dealing with today, consider you will reap what you sow, pursuing health today will reap benefits down the road. Remember the sign on the ceiling in the traction room, your actions today will effect your health 20 years from now.
“When worried about tomorrow, look for ways to participate in what God’s doing today.” – Andy Stanley
