Fall. I absolutely love it! And as we move into a week of Fall Break (here in Cherokee County GA we get a week off at the end of September, primarily because we start school the first of August every year); I begin getting excited about all of the fall activities.
Pumpkin patches, hay rides, bonfires, and pumpkin flavored treats! ”Wait… what??? Treats? In your world Dr. Eric???”
Well actually, no. I teach the 60 Day Turnaround every year starting the day after the Fall Break. Why the day after? So that those who have commitment issues can overcome their commitment issues. Make a break for the beach, have a great time, eat some ice cream, have some forbidden foods, and then drive towards health and commitment.
On a very serious note. I believe it is great to have those periods where we are cheating in the form of an 80/20 life. 80% perfect, 20% not. It provides us opportunity to be “normal” and in community with those around us. Yet to always be pushing to be better than the 5/6. (If you don’t get the reference… 5/6 of our population is dying from heart disease and cancer, though I cannot provide any guarantee of not being in that 5/6, I can provide solutions to reduce your risk of being in the 5/6)
So what is this tradition thing I speak of? Well, over 400,000 adjustments given, and the associated lifestyle conversations that go with that kind of experience, I have come to realize that MANY people will choose NOT to be committed to lifestyle change BECAUSE of their traditions. The smell of a pumpkin spiced latte in their car, or pumpkin muffins coming out of the oven, or pumpkin pies. Or perhaps it isn’t the fall, it’s the start of winter, and Christmas Cookies… or some other addiction that we think cannot be given up.
Well to that I say GARBAGE! Take ONE YEAR and be committed to NO END, be committed beyond committed. Show yourself and those around you that you can give up all the things you love for just one year. This will help you to have the confidence that you can win at anything. That you can take charge of ANY area of your life. This is the key to success in so many arenas of life. Then next year when you come back around to this time, you can live 80/20. You can win every year from this point forward based on what you accomplish this year.
Final point, the point of all points, the WIN in the loss. The BIG WIN in all of this, is that if you let me. I will teach you how to make a pumpkin spiced latte without the garbage in it. How to make pumpkin muffins without grains and sugar… and to love them. To solve your greatest desires, and enjoy yet not cave. This is a win that allows you to be steadfast in your commitments.
Now to that end, if you are simply a committed person… you might prefer to give up on everything that you enjoy for a season. It is empowering beyond understanding, until you actually do it.
