A new study suggests that it is possible that this massive increase in whooping cough outbreak over the last decade (more in 2012 than any year since 1955), is due to a vaccine change that took place a decade ago. I have reported with all of the outbreaks, especially the more recent measles outbreak, that the data continues to point to vaccinated individuals being the more prevalent group in these outbreaks. For example, the CDC immediately issued a statement that they were looking at adding another booster for the measles, post Disneyland outbreak. Why? Because they were vaccinated individuals.
So the question you should be asking, is why don’t these vaccines work?
This study, which I read about in ABC Science (referencing a paper in PLOS Computational Biology) suggests that the level of protection of the currently used acellular vaccine is not as significant as that protection that was afforded in the whole-cell vaccine. Personally, regardless, I still believe that acquired natural immunity is the only answer for diseases such as this. However, there is no sense in me arguing that point right now, when the goal should simply be to get the focus on what is being done WITH vaccines for now, and not what is being done without.

Gambhir says the original whole-cell vaccine developed in 1942 was very effective.
Following introduction of vaccination, the reported disease incidence in the US dropped from 150 cases per 100,000 each year before 1940, to the point of near elimination in the mid-1970s when there were just 0.5 reported cases per 100,000 population.
“Now in the past decade we have seen a rise from that low to about 10-20 cases per 100,000,” says Gambhir.
“It’s the kind of numbers we haven’t seen since the mid-1950s so we are right back to the period before vaccines were introduced.”
Gambhir, who led the study with Dr Thomas Clark at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta, Georgia, and Professor Neil Ferguson, of the Imperial College London in the UK, says while the number of cases remains low the trend is upward.
“It’s the sort of five-year by five-year rise that is the concern because the worry is it could go back to those levels at which we would start seeing infant deaths,” he says.
I need to pause really quickly and post up this image, so that you can see why I tend to disagree with Gambhir, regarding the efficacy of the whole cell vaccine, as I think it was natural immunity doing its job. I’ll circle back around to that point in a minute, but wanted to take a moment to inject my belief here before going on to discuss this article.
(Notice that the article quoted incidence of whooping cough, not deaths from whooping cough like the graph below. I tend to think the deaths are what we care about. Meaning, would you run around vaccinating for the common cold? Only if people were dying at high numbers, so as whooping cough was no longer killing people, the focus should have moved towards building more immunity)
Lets get back to the article, again, our point today is to first understand why the increase in current whooping cough outbreaks, and according to the strong literature, it seems highly likely that this is due to the weakness of the vaccine given over the last decade.

Gambhir says in 1991 researchers developed a new vaccine to address public concerns that the whooping cough vaccine caused a reaction in some children.
This vaccine, known as acellular pertussis vaccine, used particular components of the bacteria that were believed to generate the immune response, but was essentially artificially created.
Gambhir says the impact of the change in vaccine has taken time to show in the data.
“You didn’t see an immediate increase [in whooping cough],” he says. “It has taken cohorts of children to have all of their doses to be the new vaccine for the increases in disease to manifest themselves.”
Gambhir says the efficacy of the acellular vaccine is still high – around 80 per cent protection for the first three doses – but there has been a “significant drop” when compared with the older whole-cell vaccine (90 per cent protection).
He says current global research into new pertussis vaccines needs to continue, however their study also suggests changes to the current schedule of pertussis vaccinations and further booster doses may be required.
Gambhir says while there is debate over vaccination in the media, they did not find a drop in the overall level of whooping cough vaccination in the US.
Read the last statement again. Gambhir is addressing the media and subsequent lawmakers who have decided that the outbreaks are due to the anti vaccine proponents in the country. Whereas I stated in the above video, and have re-stated in my writing, that vaccine numbers have not gone down at all. Currently there are a large number of people who are in the upper middle class who are choosing not to vaccinate. Yet, the overall efforts of the public health movement has resulted in so many lower class vaccines (this population has historically had poor access to vaccines), that the overall total number has not dropped, and according to CDC reports, has actually gone up.
This is why this study is so valuable. It helps to point out the fault in blaming the anti vaccine movement for the outbreaks, as well as gives a more important point. The people whom are trusted to make decisions in this country to benefit the whole country, make decisions based on money and relationship before anything else. The primary reason why this decision was made a decade ago, goes back to who convinced who, out of the primary force of money.
In closing, I want to circle back to the disease prevalence graph. Natural immunity is that which is bestowed on somebody from exposure. The basis of natural immunity comes from ongoing exposure, not just selected exposure. It is this reason why you should not be overly cautious about your children. They cannot develop an immune system that is responsive to incoming bacteria and viral attacks without being exposed to bacterial and viral attacks. I hope you can see the creator in the philosophy that drives your own health decisions.
