You may have seen an ad recently for this new product from Centrum; Vitamints. Is this a great new idea, to help people to make sure they get their needed vitamins, in an easy, enjoyable way? When I first saw the add, I thought it was a pretty good idea, I’m not a huge fan of swallowing capsules on a daily basis and taking my vitamins as a mint would be convenient. It’d be like 2 birds with one stone; breath and vitamins.
The problem is that when you take a supplement you want to be sure it is a good product. This is not something you want to cheap out on or simply reach for convenience. You want something that you know will beneficial and have value for your health; because, well its your health we’re talking about here!
So I had a quick look at the ingredients in these new Vitamints.
Ingredients: Isomalt, Maltodextrin, Sodium Ascorbate (Vit. C), dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (Vit. E). Contains <2% of: Acacia, Acesulfame Potassium, Beta-Carotene, BHT (to preserve freshness), Biotin, Blue 2 Lake, Calcium Pantothenate, Cholecalciferol (Vit. D3), Chromic Chloride, Citric Acid Esters of Mono- and Di-Glycerides, Cyanocobalamin (Vit. B12), Dibasic Calcium Phosphate, Folic Acid, Gelatin, Magnesium Stearate, Manganese Sulfate, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Mono- and Di-Glycerides, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Niacinamide, Phytonadione (Vit. K), Potassium Iodide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vit. B6), Sodium Molybdate, Sodium Selenate, Sucralose, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vit. B1), Tocopherols (to preserve freshness), Vitamin A Acetate, Zinc Oxide.
Among all that the one the really jumps out to me is Sucralose aka Splenda. This is suppose to be a vitamin, to provide and improve health. Sucralose does the opposite. Just some problems its been shown to cause: gastrointestinal issues, seizures, dizziness, migraines, blurred vision, blood sugar increases and weight gain. There is also carcinogenic potential. For more info go here: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/12/18/sucralose-side-effects.aspx
Sucralose alone is enough for me to NOT buy something. It doesn’t matter what else is in there, I’m not buying it if Sucralose is there, especially something that is suppose to improve my health.
So what should we look for in a vitamin. Well the source is important. There different forms of the vitamins and minerals that we find in our supplements, some we can digest and utilize, some we can’t. Obviously if we can’t utilize the ingredients, its pretty pointless. So the easiest way to know if its a good supplement is if it is food sourced. You know, food, that wonderful gift from God, made perfect for our consumption to thrive. Whenever I think about this, usually during the summer when we grow our garden, it amazes me how we can just drop a seed in the ground and food will start growing. Vegetables that take all those great nutrients from the soil and turn them into a tasty package that we can consume, and utilize. Why supplement at all when we can just eat fruits and vegetables to get all of our nutrient needs?
Well the truth is, you really shouldn’t have to, assuming you are eating at least 13 servings of those each day. If you’re hitting that amount you should be good with your nutrient needs. If you’re not, you need to be taking Juice Plus to get you the rest of the way. I’m sure you’ve heard us talk about it before, its because we feel it should be your first thought when it comes to supplementation. This is because it IS food; not just food sourced, but it is actual food in capsule or gummy form. Some of their ingredients from the orchard and garden blends: Apple Acerola Cherry Beet Cranberry Date Orange Pineapple Papaya Peach Prune Broccoli Brown Rice Bran Cabbage Carrot Garlic Kale Oat Bran Parsley Spinach Tomato I’d rather have that in my supplement than the list of ingredients above which I only recognize from chemistry class.
Check out this website to learn more about juice plus, and if you don’t take it, you can make your first order!
Lastly, we will hit Supplementation and Juice Plus in one of our workshops in the 60 Day Turnaround. Are you ready?
