In so many things, and in so many ways, we like what is bad for us. It is the behavior that we begin, because we see enjoyment in it, that turns around and becomes the habit that hurts us. Health is easy, but lets put an exclamation point on it by looking at other areas first.
When I was 18, I was ready to head off to college (just 40 minutes away) in Buffalo. I would be commuting the first year, and planned to move into an apartment the second year. I got a credit card because it seemed like the smart thing to do, have the ability to get gas when I needed, and not have to scrape for change in the console on weeks between pay (I was in a band that played steady, and I worked for a carpenter all through my undergraduate years).
The credit card was smart, until it wasn’t. I had gone to JC Penney, looking for something in particular. I don’t recall what it was at this time, but I do recall spending an additional $250 on a gym bag and a pair of shoes. I didn’t have $250 in the “budget” for such things. But we all know how easy it is to spend, and how easy it is to get a little crazy and spend too much. It is a good thing that the limit was $500 on that card. Because I would have very easily spent another $500 before the statement arrived.
It is good to be warned before you get too deep.
How about food? Like I said at first, health is easy… it is easy to see how much food holds our attention, grabbing us and holding us hostage. I contend that sugar is the strongest addiction on the planet. Partially because culture sets us up to not “worry” about it so much. Drugs and Alcohol get painted into a very bad corner… but the crazy thing to me, is that our culture has made it ok to use drugs, as long as they have been prescribed by a doctor. Instead of saying “I might need to use this to get me through this moment, but there is no way I am sticking with this for more than a month”… we say “well, he said i needed it, there must be something wrong with me, so I guess I need it.”
But still… these are easy to see… if we let ourselves.
You see the problem is that we like these comforts, and so we don’t like to talk about them. We don’t like the man in the mirror so much… so why look at him? What about the more difficult behaviors, ones that are not as obvious, but equally destructive. I have talked with a decent number of men who suffered with porn addiction… a very difficult one. I have seen the addiction cycle to laziness, and though it might not seem like there is an addiction there, I guarantee you there is. Addiction to screen time that we see our next generation kids battle… it is a tough one because it is so easy to access, and in so many cases, it is hard to point out how bad it can be. On the other side of the spectrum, a much more blatant side, infidelity.
I write this today because it is not a lack of knowledge that is destroying us in respect to these areas… it is a lack of strength. Join me and lets begin our cleansing of our spirit and our soul through a cleanse of the gut. I promise you that if you set yourself on a path of controlling all food that goes in, you will find that you can control all other things in your life more readily.
