There is still time to get yourself something cool to do! Yep, this is a blog post about doing something cool on Memorial Day. Very health focused indeed… but actually it is, your mental health!!
So first off, how do you remember it is Memorial Day and not Labor Day, and what does it matter to you? Memorial begins with an M, kind of like the month of May… so for now on, just keep that in your sites. Now… why it matters? The same reason it matters that all CrossFit gyms around the country do Memorial Day Murph, vs. Labor Day Murph. Because even though I care about celebrating the employees of the US govt. for their service to us all… I care more about celebrating those who served in the armed forces to not only protect our country, but to risk their lives protecting the civil liberty of all people on the planet.
For me, Memorial Day means something because my grandfather was one of those people. It means something because my Christian belief is that we go into the world to love everybody, and everybody who oppresses large groups of people needs to be remanded to a life in prison or worse. That we are here to be freedom fighters, and though I never did that myself, I wish I had. And I love celebrating those who did.
Murph… if you have not caught wind of the movement that has been pushed very hard by the CrossFit community to celebrate the life of all who have given theirs for freedom, you should. The workout “Murph” named after Lieutenant Michael “Murph” Murphy, is a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 squats followed by another 1 mile run. This fabulous workout is also designed to be done with a weight vest on… 20# is sufficient. The reason why so many crossfitters go after this workout every year, is respect. Its reverence. It is meaning.
So, as I circle back around to “what are you doing this Memorial Day”… I hope you consider this day is about something… and it is about someone… many someones. All incredibly important to the world.
Murph has a story. His story is best seen by watching the movie Lone Survivor. Long before this movie came out, CrossFitters were testing themselves doing his workout, but it has grown significantly since the movie. I personally like to think of the ultimate hero sacrifice when I am doing these workouts… not just the men whom have gone into battle and gave their lives for freedom, but the one man who did it to give us all freedom. Christ’s willing decision to die on a cross.
Memorial Day matters for so many reasons… please take the time to make the most of it. Enjoy your family, and celebrate the gift of freedom.
