You may have heard us use this term before, “expressing health.” We like to use it in place of what culture refers to as being “sick.” Saying we’re sick makes it sound like our body’s not working the way it should, that we are lacking function when we have symptoms, like a fever. The truth is that most symptoms we experience when we are “sick” are actually signs that tell us our body is intelligently designed and is functioning properly. When your child spikes that fever, it is because their body is a well tuned infection fighting machine, and the fever is their expression of health.
Fever – Perhaps the Most Over-treated Symptom of All – Dr. Mercola
There are two main functions of a fever, to stimulate your immune system and create an environment in which infectious microbes cannot survive. The ideal temperature for killing off infectious microbes is between 102 and 103 degrees. Your increased temperature will also stimulate production of antibodies (specifically attack foreign microbes), producing more white blood cells, producing more interferon, and walling off iron.
Instead of “treating” a fever, consider supporting it. Allowing it to run its course. Some of the best options are simply drinking plenty of water and eating broth soups. Its also recommended to avoid solid foods because peristalsis, which is what moves food through your intestines, slows while you have a fever. Rest is also a key. When my kids spike a fever we will support it and monitor it, taking their temperature on a regular basis to make sure it doesn’t go too high. Every time it happens I’m always impressed at how precise and efficient they are. Typically they will steadily rise, and yes, as it starts to reach the high 103 range close to 104, I will usually start to wonder if we need to intervene, and question if we’re doing the right thing, but we never have needed to. It’ll stop right up there ,stay there a bit and then start to slowly drop, its almost as if there is someone consciously, and perfectly adjusting their temperature at the right rate, for the right amount of time, to have the greatest efficiency at killing invaders. Its really amazing when I think about it. We are wonderfully made!
According to Dr. Mercola, times when you should intervene with a fever:
- Infants less than 1 month, seek care if fever is greater than 100.4 – Nurse on demand while waiting for care, this will help support the baby;s immune system.
- Infants 1 to 3 months seek care if the temperature is greater than 100.4 and they seem ill, again nurse on demand.
- Children 3 to 36 months with temperature above 102.2 and if they appear ill.
- All ages with temperatures over 104.5
Another thing to consider is that damage occurs at a temperature of 107 degrees.
Next time you or your child has a fever, remember the fever is the expression of your health, your body functioning as it was intended by our creator. Think twice before interfering with God’s plan!
