According to the label (below), the Orange Tic-Tacs, have 0 grams of any of the macro-nutrients that make up food, including sugar. If you are someone that is conscious about what you’re eating, like we are when we follow a strict diet like the Straight 60, you’ll find yourself looking at a lot of labels like this. You may think, great a treat that is actually 60-day approved. Hopefully you’ll wonder what these sweet treats are actually made of and check the ingredient list.
From the Tic Tac website:
SUGAR, MALTODEXTRIN, TARTARIC ACID, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, RICE STARCH, GUM ARABIC, MAGNESIUM STEARATE, ASCORBIC ACID, YELLOW 6, CARNAUBA WAX.
As you can see the first ingredient is sugar, which by listing it first means it is the most abundant ingredient in the Tic Tac. Yet, the contain no sugar per serving. The reason they are able to get away with this is because the regulations for labeling sugars, allows for anything in a serving less than 0.5 grams to be labeled as zero. In the case of Tic Tacs, a serving is 1 single piece, which itself is only 0.5 grams, therefore allowing the sugar, along with the other ingredients, to be labeled as 0 grams in the nutrition facts.
Another example of this is on Pam Cooking spray. The serving size is 1/4 second worth of spray with approximately 1,464 servings per container. Again the nutrition facts label states there are 0 grams fat even though the second ingredient is canola oil. I wouldn’t recommend Pam anyway, but I’m sure there are people out there using it thinking there’s no fat (which non-fat isn’t good anyway, actually quite the opposite of what you want).
When in doubt, look to the ingredient list. Its much more likely to give you an accurate idea of what you are actually eating, especially when doing the Straight 60. But, its also good to be aware, there can be deception in the ingredients as well. You may now see the ingredient Fructose listed in place of the term high fructose corn syrup. Not a huge deal because we should just avoid either one.
