Eric,

Greetings from Houston. I thought I would send you a story for your Healthsprout files.

For the last 5 months, I’ve been doing my best to follow the diet/nutrition in the Maximized Living book.  Just before Christmas, I decided to completely eliminate sugar and reduce carbs.  I eliminated all wheat, rice, potatoes, all processed carbs.  I don’t eat anything with any form of sucrose, fructose, whaterever-ose.  That means, for example, peanut butter is out (why do they need to put sugar in everything??), and almost anything that comes in a package.  What little bit of sweetener I use is xylitol.  I eat a lot of eggs and spinach for breakfast, lots of berries and full-fat plain yogurt with whey protein powder (stevia sweetened), ground flax seed bread and crackers, lots of chicken, beef, and some fish and green vegetables.

On the exercise front, I’ve been doing Crossfit since October.  There were a couple of down periods, but I’m commonly working out 3 to 5 times per week.  In the last 5 months, I’ve lost 30 pounds.  My waist size has dropped from (approaching) 38″ to 32″.  It’s like I’m wearing another man’s clothing when I try to wear my old clothes.

Yesterday, I saw a doctor for an annual check up.  I showed him my lipid panel from ’07 when I was put on two statin drugs.  It took two prescriptions to get my blood to “behave”.  He read me the riot act about my genetics requiring that I take drugs for life, or I would die.  He was mildly interested in the fact that I had lost weight, but indifferent about my diet change.

Below, are my numbers for my lipid panel, yesterday versus ’07.  Praise the Lord!  My body works the way He created it, when I treat it the way He intends!

5/9/11 11/30/07 Standard
CHOLESTEROL, TOTAL 183 259 100 – 199 mg/dL
TRIGLYCERIDES 231 1116 0 – 149 mg/dL
HDL CHOLESTEROL 48 30 >39 - mg/dL
VLDL CHOLESTEROL 46 5 – 40 mg/dL
LDL CHOLESTEROL 89 0 – 99 mg/dL

Thanks for your influence.
