I enjoy discussing the aspect of love first in our world, and all else follows. As a Christian, my calling is to take the first two commandments very seriously, and let all others happen naturally because of those two.
- Love God
- Love People
Not hard right? Ha. It is funny how quick we are to…
- Ignore God
- Judge People
I know I am one to do that, and I am reminding myself constantly to ask God’s presence into my practice, and into the efforts that I have as it relates to my patients, and the effort that I give as it relates to my communication with my patients. We want to remove our judgement and replace it with His truth. The place where we need to start, in order to demonstrate that consistently, is with our own love.
So what is the application? What is the reason why this all should matter? I do a lot of work with people who are under hormonal stress. Leptin (diet), growth hormone and testosterone (diet and activity levels), cortisol (stress)… these are the primary drivers of their health issues in many cases. So how do you deal with stress?
In an over simplified answer… Love.
So for those of you who are totally stressed out, I am not telling you that you don’t have love in your life, I would tell you to first focus on love. Let love be the thing that pulls you into a place of low stress. If you know you don’t have a lot of love in your life, then change it. Love God and love people.
Morning rituals can change everything. First thing in the morning, find a focus on love, and use that to reduce your stress levels. I like to wake up in thanks. The first thing I do when I wake up, is begin saying Thank You. I like to thank God for the obvious things, my wife, kids, career, patients, etc. But some mornings it goes to some odd things too, thank you for the challenges of life, the struggles, the difficult situations, the financial stresses, the hurdles… and I will get specific with those.
If you are to overcome your stresses, and find peace in them, then show love to God for those things that are stresses. You are becoming a more resilient individual when you face stress, but most people become more sick individuals along the way because they do not USE their stress as a gift. In my stress workshop, I discuss the period of time when I was closing and selling offices, and the IRS was going through my personal and business life… everything was difficult. BUT, it was the most valuable time in my life for conditioning me to stress.
I have told classes that I truly believe that this one moment in my life, this little sliver of time in my life, has made me almost completely resilient to stress. The world was falling apart all around me, and I lost the sight in my left eye right at the start of this time. It reconciled the idea in my mind of losing everything worldly, and gaining everything heavenly. It suddenly made everything that we do to “succeed” in life, truly about God and not me. If it works out, great, if it doesn’t, great. If my family’s health is good, great… if it fails for some reason, great.
We pursue it all out of a desire to be obedient, and that first step to obedience is love God and love Others.
